Donate Your Linux Memorabilia For
Special 20th Anniversary of Linux
Gallery at LinuxCon
20th Anniversary of Linux Logo

The Linux Foundation is producing a
historical gallery for LinuxCon
North America to help celebrate
Linux’s last 20 years. This gallery
will be a walk down memory lane that
should be fun for everyone, but we
need your help! A few samples of
what we already have collected: the
original books Linus used to learn
programming, a video booth where you
can leave your story of Linux,
pictures and videos from the history
of Linux, a timeline of major Linux
accomplishments, CDs and boxes of
early Linux distributions, computers
used to do early hacking,
memorabilia from IBM’s
Peace/Love/Linux campaign and much
more.

For more information on the Gallery
and how to donate, please visit

Could You Do Linus Torvalds' Job?
Find Out and Get 25% Off LinuxCon
Registration
Linus Torvalds

Most of you know that Linus Torvalds
is the creator of Linux. But how
many of us know what text editor he
uses? Or, what he does when he gets
an ugly patch submission?

If you think you could dethrone the
King of Linux, we invite you take
our new Facebook Quiz: "Could you do
Linus Torvalds' Job?" Linus has made
it clear he's not going anywhere.
But, it would be pretty cool to know
if you've got what it takes; and,
then to show off your know-how to
your friends/family on your Facebook
wall (among other locations) with
custom badges you'll receive based
on your scores. You could be a
"Linus Clone" or "Linus Stalker."
You won't know until you take the
quiz.

We know not all Linux fans are
Facebook members for a variety of
reasons. We totally get that. But we
still wanted to give our dedicated
Facebook fans a unique way to get
involved in the celebration and to
share it with their friends,
bringing even more people to the
Linux community. We have a variety
of platforms and channels we use to
involve different parts of the
community and run similar programs
in these online destinations,
including platforms like Linux.com
and channels like Twitter and
Identi.ca.

This "Just for Fun" quiz is helping
to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of
Linux, which will be formally
recognized at LinuxCon in Vancouver,
B.C., where Linus is confirmed to
speak. He's also expected to attend
the LinuxCon Gala, the official
party to mark this year's important
milestone. By taking the quiz, you
will get a custom code for 25% off
of your LinuxCon registration. You
can take the quiz as many times as
you like, and we encourage you to
challenge your friends to beat your
score!

Jim Zemlin Writes: Who Says You
Can't Make Money With Open Source
Jim Zemlin

In this blog post, The Linux
Foundation's Executive Director Jim
Zemlin illustrates with very
specific examples how Linux and open
source are the underpinnings for
today's software economy.

Excerpt: Another major global IT
vendor has launched a product based
on Linux - the HP Touchpad, which
looks quite promising from early
reviews. Even so, it is ironic that
I still hear the following comment
from a number of investors and
business people:

“Open source is great, but you can’t
make any money with it.”

While for some reason this sentiment
has existed as long as open source
software has been in existence, the
facts don’t support it; in fact, the
facts expose it to be a statement
hovering between unbelievable and
ridiculous.

Toyota Joins Linux Foundation as
Gold Member
Toyota Logo

A major shift is underway in the
automotive industry. Carmakers are
using new technologies to deliver on
consumer expectations for the same
connectivity in their cars as
they’ve come to expect in their
homes and offices. From dashboard
computing to In-Vehicle-Infotainment
(IVI), automobiles are becoming the
latest wireless devices – on wheels.

The Linux operating system is
providing a common platform that
helps connect the world’s network of
devices, including cars. As an open
source operating system, it provides
automakers and their partners the
flexibility they require to bring to
market the latest technology
features quickly.

Toyota is joining The Linux
Foundation as a Gold member to
maximize its own investment in Linux
while fostering open innovation
throughout the automotive ecosystem.

Linux gives us the flexibility and
technology maturity we require to
evolve our In-Vehicle-Infotainment
and communications systems to
address the expectations of our
customers,” said Kenichi Murata,
Project General Manager, Electronics
Development Div. 1, TOYOTA MOTOR
CORPORATION. “The Linux Foundation
provides us with a neutral forum in
which we can collaborate with the
world’s leading technology companies
on open innovation that accelerates
that evolution.”
