Jan,

Just an idea: would you consider upgrading to 11.04?

I'm using it and I find Unity marvelous ( flame bait: don't listen to the
'menu miners', they just fear change ;-) )
If you don't like unity - (it does have some remaining issues with compiz,
but I don't use those features) - you can login with Gnome classic.
It will reset many settings to default, and shouldn't break your mails or
anything.


Regarding your graphics card, try this:
