The one I am referring to wraps around tesseract so it should work for him.

ocrfeeder is the only GUI OCR frontend I can see in the Ubuntu archive.

There are a bunch of command line tools that are relatively good.
tesseract and ocropus have good reputations. The GUI frontends all just
wrap around one of these.
