Morning, my experiences with VirtualBox USB pass-through:
1. VirtualBox. With the change of license, I'm not sure if the
binaries from Oracle are required, or if the OSE edition will
suffice - I've been using the binary from Oracle (currently 4.0.10)
2. You need the VirtualBox Extension Pack installed (licensed under
VirtualBox Personal Use and Evaluation License).
3. Depending on the installation - you may need to add your user
account to the vboxusers group. Typically, I do.
4. Enable the USB 2.0 Controller in the settings of the VM.
5. Once the guest has started, select the device to pass-through (see attached).
I've added the repository to my sources - instructions at
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads under "Debian-based Linux
distributions".
