Hi Nick,
I noticed this too for another distro which defaulted to a DE repo, which
didn't have some packages I needed.
I think, because choosing your location in the installer, sets your timezone
(TZ) _and_ the repository sources accordingly. Installing for US will use
the US repo servers, as apposed to the ZA ones, the difference between them
explains the extra packages available.
If you look in menu System -> Administration -> Software Sources you can
choose which repo server to use.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's my guess :]
