The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), located in
Muizenberg, Cape Town, is an innovative pan-African centre of learning
for postgraduate teaching and research in the mathematical sciences.
We are looking for an Linux IT Support Technician or System administrator,
with 2+ years experience. We have 130 ubuntu destkops, 10 ubuntu servers,
and 50 or so visiting laptops of various operating systems.
Duties:
These positions will report to the IT Manager and will: provide Linux
desktop support; limited Windows/Mac support; document network, processes,
and services; maintain network, hardware, desktops; manage user accounts;
monitor and troubleshoot services; perform backups; and all related IT tasks.
Requirements:
A tertiary qualification and/or a relevant IT qualification
and/or work experience; Solid experience with Ubuntu or Debian; experience
in Linux desktop support; familiarity with Linux mail, web, file, and
authentication services; understanding of firewalls, routing, and proxies;
bash and/or Python scripting; customer-service orientation; self-motivated
and self-disciplined; ability to work in a team; good written and spoken
communication skills; experience with hardware support and procurement;
understanding of network protocols; enthusiasm to work in a culturally
diverse organisation.
Additional recommendations:
Any of: experience with Google Apps; experience with Open Source web and
database technologies (e.g. django); Asterisk/VOIP; experience with scientific
software (e.g. SciPy, SAGE, LaTeX.); bandwidth management; high availability
clustering, virtualization, replication technologies; programming languages
(e.g. C, Fortran, Java.); understanding of French or Arabic
