[ubuntu-za] NETBOOK CRASH

Hi All,

I recently bought a Gigabyte Q1000 netbook & installed 10.04,taking out
windows 7.everything worked perfectly.
However I needed to change ownership of some files that 10.04 had locked
as root during backup on my desktop for a PIM program that I wanted to
update on the netbook.

In using chown, with the command "sudo" I was denied permission and ever
since then, certain files seemed to have been destroyed.

On startup, a pop up window appears saying "Could not update
ICEauthority /var/lib/gdm/.ICEauthority"

After closing this, another window appears Stating "There is a problem
with the configuration server. (usr/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2
exited with status 256)"

I can still open 10.04 and use most of the programs, however some will
not open.ie. gparted, it does not recognise the printer or the external
dvd writer. This obviously presents a problem in trying to reload 10.04.

I hoping someone can suggest a way around this other than reloading
windows.

Regards
Vince
