Guess I'm replying to my own posts, because somebody will read this or
google the posting and there's some weirdness in the system since I
downgraded the GDM. Basically every time I boot up I get a message:

Server busy, do you want to start GDM in a different location. If I do
nothing it attempts to start at :0, if I F7 at this time I login with my
KDE login screen. The system isn't stable because it keeps doing this
every time I boot up, so there is some veracity to the one posting about
the usplash and runlevels. Will try upgrading again when I have the time
and enough courage.
