[ubuntu-za] CANNOT OPEN THUNDERBIRD?

Hi Vince,
I had one thought. Was Thunderbird running when you backed up your home
folder? It might be that Thunderbird has a lock file to say it is
running which might have been copied. Try finding the lock file and
deleting it (I guess it should be in the .mozilla folder but I don't use
Thunderbird) or maybe make sure everything is shutdown first before
backing up, maybe log out and ctrl-alt-2 to a terminal and copy the
files from there.
