[ubuntu-za] Sun Java on Ubuntu

Hi Guys.

Forgive me for asking a silly question.

I am helping a friend (over email) get Ubuntu up and running on his PC.

He has attempted to install Java from the Java.com website.  The
installation didn't encounter any errors, but does not function
correctly yet.  From what I remember there is a final step required to
tell ubuntu where to find his installation of java, such that when you
type java -version in terminal it responds appropriately.

Installing java from the repositories is not an option which is why we
are going this route.

Any suggestions?
