Alf,
Have you run '$ galternatives' (Alternatives Configurator) ?
If you haven't, run it & make sure you're using the correct JDK/java
installation (check jar, java, jre, javadoc, and all other
java-related entries)
Ubuntu is by default configured to use gcj which is another non-sun
OSS java project (that never quite worked for me... but that's just me).
