[ubuntu-za] Lost configuration file

Suddenly on my Ubuntu 8.10 I have lost the relationship between file suffixes 
and the default program with which to open that file. This was probably caused 
by uninstalling a program.

As an example when I click on a pdf file my system opens it with Gimp rather 
than Evince.

Please tell me where I should look for this file so that I may repair it.
