Don't have experience on any other printers but have never had problems wid HP and recommend those to clients wanting to run linux desktops.

I use the HP PSC (Printer, Scanner, Copier) 1613 All-in-One with no problem 
under Kubuntu 8.10. Worked out of the box too... no fax, though.
