Hi
In Karmic you can view the logs via the menu System -> Admin -> Log file
viewer. Select the 'messages' section on the left, and you can track them by
their times. Look for messages around the time of the system freeze. You
might see a clue, or not, but its good practice to check anyway. You can
also view the user, dmesg and Xorg (video) logs. I notice the xorg doesn't
have times though, strange.
For interest, logs are kept in /var/log/ and you can get the log output of
'messages', for example with a "cat /var/log/messages" command ;)
