Very possibly this experience is caused by Xorg autoloading the VESA driver as 
a form of failsafe driver if it cannot find the appropriate 
hardware-accelerated driver for your card. Convenient for in the case of that 
your screen will nearly always work, not so convenient in the 3D sense :-). 
What display card do you have in your machine, so we can assist you with 
getting the proper driver in place?
