[ubuntu-za] New installation on a Acer TravelMate 2353LCi laptop

I am trying to install 7.10 on this laptop from an alternate i386 CD.
It asked me for my proxy and I entered it for the Universtiy of Pretoria
network after which a message said that "configuring apt" was 40%
complete. After a few minutes it was 60 % complete and then the system
hung. What should be the next step?
