[ubuntu-za] installing ubuntu on a usb 120gig samsung hard drive

hi list

has any one tried to install ubuntu onto a external usb hard drive. i went
thru the entire install process fine, then when it boots everything seams
well. it shows the bit map ubuntu image and cross bar loading stuff... then
a message pops up

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

this sounds quite simple. it would seam that all i need to do is turn job
control on, but im not sure how to do that

i would apreciate any help
