[ubuntu-x] Bug in latest update to nvidia-96 drivers?

Have you folks heard about the problem discussed at

and

?  It looks like an update about a month ago partially broke the
render extension
in the old nvidia drivers (nvidia-96).  Running any Wine app that draws
text (e.g. any of the little utilities that come with wine, like notepad)
shows that fonts are unusable.  A workaround is to turn off wine's
use of the XRender extension by setting

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver]
"ClientSideWithRender"="N"

but this makes some apps slow, iirc.

This is quite a problem for users with older nvidia hardware.
