shouldn't be necessary, the xserver does that automatically? (ie. fbdev is 
the fallback driver on ppc, just like vesa is for i386/amd64)

same here, shouldn't be necessary, unless it fails to get any valid mode. 
Logfiles are useful.

There already is PS3 specific stuff in /usr/bin/dexconf.
