Hi Hannah
It should be possible to 'turn-off' the custom interface and use the
standard one by using the desktop switcher under the 'system' menu.
This will save you having to reinstall. Be warned, the menus many have
changed since I last used it, or Dell may have rearranged things. In
case the desktop switcher isn't installed, it can be downloaded via
the Ubuntu Software Centre.
Virtualbox-ose (opensource edition) should be available in the Ubuntu
Software Centre also.
