Linux/Ubuntu laptop with no eth/lan port

Hi.

This goes along with my trying to get a better understanding of ubuntu
on a laptop.

Appears a bunch of laptops no longer ship with builin eth/lan ports!!

So, my question. If you have a laptop that runs Ubuntu, does it have
the built in drivers to support eth/lan - USB adapters (dongle)? nor
would there need to be other mods to connect to "Eth".
