My bad, I meant I performed Steps 1-6, and I tried Step 7 based on
your recommendation. It did not help with the problem.

Yeah, that's what I thought, too. That's why I tried the Intel card
with the i915 driver.

I was testing it some more this morning. I still see the black
screens, and I can still SSH into the box. But I noticed: if I
CTRL+ALT+DEL then the shutdown shows a brief [colorful] Ubuntu logo
during shutdown.

Weird...
