Thank you Karl for your reply.
I've spent hours on this and out of desperation I thought I'd set up
another gmail account for my relative. Both gmail accounts work and
e-mails can be sent to and from each other. For some unfathomable reason
the second gmail account also works with Thunderbird but the first one
will not. Both accounts are identical except the second account has one
less character in the password and two extra characters in the e-mail
address.
Now the hard part begins; showing her how to send and receive e-mails.
