Here's why all the mate stuff got pulled in.

* Revert new dependency on mate-session-manager.
     mate-system-monitor is used by Ubuntu Budgie & Ubuntu Unity
     and mate-session-manager pulls in the MATE desktop.

Obviously your system updated before the reverted change got pushed out 
for distribution.

These things can happen when you run an OS still under development, 
unfortunately. Adding new dependencies to packages during the beta cycle 
freeze seems somewhat unusual, but I don't know for sure about that.
