Delay in shutdown

This is a long shot... but I have modified /etc/default/grub to get
messages on power up and shutdown.
I put a '#' character in front of the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line to
comment it out. Here iit is:
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
After saving the updated /etc/default/grub file, I then did a
$ sudo update-grub
Be very careful how you modify /etc/default/grub - I would recommend making
a backup copy of it before making any changes.
