Yes they were, but the thing is, they used very little power. They
were cheap, wouldn't cut into desktop chip margins, they ran cool and
could be made to use thin machines with small batteries.
They are still around as big manycore chips with NUMA cache, used in
things like 5G base stations, as I wrote nearly 2 years ago:
