No, you are missing the point. You wrote "Keep slapping them and they’ll
stop. And we’ll be back to sending hundreds of dollars to Microsoft or
Apple" It's vice versa, I would welcome if some developers would stop,
if so users could stay with Linux and don't need to migrate to Microsoft
and/or Apple. That said, I can't go back to Apple or Windows because I'm
not from there. My path led me from the C64 via the Atari ST to PCs with
Linux. But even in the days of Windows 98, Windows definitely had one or
the other advantage over the Linux of that time. There are domains these
days where, sadly, you have to run away from Linux screaming and reach
for Apple. The analogy with the spoiled children who have it too good is
ridiculous. Btw. it's easier to support software such as the GPL2
Stellarium by the Apple app store than by any Linux distro I used and/or
use.

In 2021 I payed 13,99 € for Stellarium PLUS on iPadOS, so I didn't
support Apple. I supported a GPL2 project. It's probably possible to
find a way to donate to this and/or other Linux projects when installing
it for free as in beer by a Linux package manager, too. But it's not
that straightforward.
