I am biased - I am a bookworm - but in my experience, I've had to read
books to provide the necessary knowledge to do stuff with computers. In
fact, the book I recently finished reading resulted in me having to buy one
book and refer to a collection of other books.
It doesn't mean you _only_ read books. Other things are available -
conference videos, websites, etc can also supplement your knowledge.
And, if you ask busy people for help - e.g. Kernel maintainers etc - I'd
check out this article as well -
