Thunderbird is fine. A few silly things they'll never fix but basically
it's all there.

Is there an "Export As..." menu anywhere? Or even "Save As..."?
If, so is it possible to select a group of messages and export it into
standard Unix MBX (mailbox) format?

I can ask the Outlook admins in my former employer's IT division.
While I managed to avoid using Microsoft software myself, they are all
welded to it and seem to know exactly what can and cannot be done.

I believe so. Their mailbox files on my system are a slightly modified
MBX format (basically the first line of a message is different, but it's
all plaintext).

Is a PST file some kind of Microsoft container? Are you saying that all
your Outlook messages are NOT on your Outlook server?
