In this case, you can use an old/end-of-life version of Ubuntu. I
recall using Bitpim back in 2012 and 2013. You should try Ubuntu
12.04.
Setup a 32-bit VM for Ubuntu.
Download the image from https://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
Once you install the OS, you need to change the base URL in
sources.list. The packages for the older Ubuntu releases can be found
at archive.ubuntu.com. Use archive.ubuntu.com in
/etc/apt/sources.list.
Then, you can install software, get updates, etc.
I use the same procedure to build old VMs for regression testing. I've
still got a Ubuntu 4 machine I use for testing.
