downloading 32 bit libs to run bitpim on Ubuntu 16

Thanks. I thought it may not be entirely version
specific. It looks like the apt-get repo has an amd64 version
and I though I may just be able to set it to something
"32". I also have Ubuntu 20 on a laptop that I could use
for this although not right away. Alternatively, if there
is a package for low level communication with old
phones that may be ok too.

If you mean Ubuntu 16.04, that release reached end of standard support
on April 2021, and is only supported via ESM. Sadly, we can't help with
that here.

If you mean Ubuntu 16.10, that release was an interim release and went
entirely end-of-life nine months after release, I believe.

You may want to start by upgrading to a supported version of Ubuntu,
such as 22.04, the current latest LTS. More info on how to upgrade an
EOL release can be found here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades Please make sure to back
up your data first.
