emacs window a solid black block after a distribution upgrade

Hi All,
So I took the nuclear option - installed Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS with no
problems reported. Made sure all updates had been applied and rebooted a
few times between installing applications.
The display problems are happening. Some things work (gnome-terminal,
Software Updater, Synaptic, Libre Office Writer). Some things don't -
emacs, Firefox, Chromium.
Now, at this point, I would have run ubuntu-bug <package name> but 1) I
don't have a package name that makes sense and 2) apport-bug requires a
working web browser to complete its activities.
Any suggestions?
TIA,
Ian
