I've been reading this thread with interest, but a question for the
Original Poster, "Grizzly"...

Is this the same computer you were using recently that has a suspected bad
hard drive?

If so, did you change out the drive? Did you test the memory? You can use
Ubuntu's "Disks" utility to check the drive's SMART status. If it shows ANY
bad blocks, you probably want to replace it.

Many computers nowadays have a full set of diagnostics available from the
boot menu; it might be worth running some of those... AFTER making sure you
have a good backup of your important data.

I mention all this because although they seem quite reliable, once a hard
drive starts going bad it often causes all sorts of unpredictable problems.
