I believe you have to log out and back in or reboot afterwards for it
to take effect, but you're right that it wouldn't have any effect. A
bit of research turned up several pages where folks said that
~/.xinitrc is only run by the “startx” command and not by the display
manager when you log in, which explains why it didn't do anything. It
still might be worth keeping it in place for times when you would
manually run startx, though.

In the ~/.bashrc file? That sounds like a perfect solution. Is it
working fine now?
