Strange mouse 'X' cursor

I did not have an .xinitrc file in my home directory, so I created one
that also included what's in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.
However, this does not appear to have any effect. I started up a
Firefox window after that, and the X cursor came back.
There are .xsession files, and I don't feel comfortable editing that yet.
I created an alias to reset the mouse cursor for myself.
