I guess the thing is called "startup disc creator" on the desktop aps
menu. The fdisk list showed 4 partitions with the boot partition on
sdb1.

The problem seems to be fixed as I booted again without the thing
inserted and it seems to be working as expected. The problem is likely
with my boot or efi stuff. Its odd there is no message in dmesg
output about who is doing that however....
