the reason is the complete dropping of the unmaintained and unsupported
gtk2 libs from the archive ...
in case of gtk2 apps ralf is actually correct, we do not have a content
snap/snap extension for these (unlike gtk3/gnome/Qt) so you would
actually need to bundle the libs in the snap (gtk2 is rather special
here) which you normally do not do anymore due to the extension system
snaps provide for all other toolkits. it makes the packaging a tad more
complex...

to achieve system access there are various interfaces, i.e. a
photoprint snap would untilize the "cups-control" interface that gives
you access to a local or remote cups daemon and to the various lp/lprng
tools. to use a browser snaps usually utilize xdg-open, which is not
the same as calling /usr/bin/firefox in a hardcoded way, but will open
html pages in the defined default browser of your desktop environment
instead.
