If the reversion happens on reboot, then you are not putting your
changes in persistent storage. If the reversion happens while the
system is running, then I would suspect something like DHCP.
But it's not clear from your description whether the names are changing
*on the device with the names* or whether they are changing *on some
system that is trying to reach that device*.
That is, does the device stop knowing what it is called, or does some
other device stop knowing what that device is called?
Either way it has a very DHCP-y feel to it.
