Battery is not charging

I have several HP laptops, and once the battery is overtaxed, it
usually never charges properly again.

The newer laptops, say in the last 5 years or so (I think) have better
charges built-in that sense the battery level and don't charge them to
death. Older ones not so much.

I have two HP laptops in the house right now. One is our movie laptop,
a 10+ year old HP with a relatively new battery I put in recently, and
it never charges properly anymore.

The other one is even older, and the battery is dead and won't charge at all.

I debated about getting a new battery (it would be the running one's
fourth) and decided it's not worth the expense. They run fine on the
charger, so I leave them plugged in when they're on.

PS: My almost 2-year old LG has a battery that runs 4-5 hours between
charges, and I still leave it plugged in most of the time because the
LG charger is smart and won't oversharge the battery.

I suspect they all still run down eventually. Such is our present
state of battery technology.
