Alternatively stay with the auto-generate thingy, but configure it to
chainload the other install.

IOW depending on what install you are running a kernel upgrade still
does change only one of the two menu.cfg, but the menu.cfg that belongs
to the grub that is chosen by the BIOS boot order does chainload the
grub of the other install.
