Well what does it do?

Depends. What desktop are you using?
GNOME 3, Cinnamon and Unity require it. You can't disable it. All are
written as plugins to OpenGL Compositors and cannot function without
one.
In KDE it's optional but in my experience makes no difference.
In MATE, LXDE, LXQt and Xfce it's optional and can be disabled, and
things work fine without it.
