I can ps, kill processes, (including X), but when I kill X, I just get the 
kernel messages from the nouveau module.  /sbin/reboot just hangs.  I'm 
guessing that the kernel is too busy with the nouveau messages to deal with 
shutting down.

Then I would have the add hassle of having to recompiling everytime I update 
the kernel.

I am using a customized MATE desktop -- I using fvwm as the window manager, 
disabled caja (file manager), don't use the mate menus.
