Strange.

You didn't answer my next question:

Note that hitting it 7 times in quick succession sends a special "I
really mean it, DO IT!" signal.

No you don't. You just install `dkms` and it happens for you. No
interaction needed, adds a minute or so to update installation time
_only_ the first time after a kernel update.

Um. That is very curious. I mean, without the window manager, file
manager (which controls the actual desktop), and "the menus" (not sure
what you mean there, but I am taking a wild guess that you mean the
desktop panels?) then there isn't really anything much of MATE *left*.

In which case, why pick MATE at all?

Sounds to me like you use FVWM. Maybe with some MATE accessories occasionally.

FVWM does not use any kind of window compositing functionality, AFAIK.
