I wonder if it was an issue with your X display manager (gdm, kdm, etc.).
For me I had a similar issue. When not logged in my laptop would go to
standby after 20 minutes.
I managed to fix it by adjusting GDM settings.

Too late for your purposes, since you have a working hardware solution.
