Many of the teeny ones (barely visible once they're in the USB port) are
compatible with Ubuntu. As a shortcut for searching, I find if they're
compatible with a Raspberry Pi without requiring special drivers, they are
likely compatible with most other hardware running any distro of linux,
too. I see many available for $10 (USD) or less.

If you had asked for a faster 5 Ghz adapter it gets a bit more
complicated... I found a BrosTrend brand one that works, but I had to
install a DKMS (dynamic kernel module support) driver in Ubuntu, which is
slightly worrisome. Helpfully (?) it updates its driver directly from a
repository at the Chinese manufacturer's website. It's fast and has worked
well, but if I had not already had one of the little adapters or a wire to
the router I'd need to copy the first driver file to the computer somehow.
