Excellent information, thank you Colin and Liam.  Good primer on router meshes.

Even with another adjustment, the laptop could not sustain a good wifi
connection to do a system update.

I bought a four-port expander (the laptop only has a few) and a
USB-wifi plug. I'll update when I can.
