I've used KDE since the mid 90s and I do suspect that it may be causing 
the system to over heat. I tried unity a few years ago and didn't like 
it at all.

Mine's an i5. I will check the GPU acceleration option.

The laptop came with 4GB of ram. I bought an extra 2GB from an eBay 
seller assuming that it was a single 4GB board, it turned out to be 2x 
2GB units.
