No.  If you wanted to do this, you'd need to use a fancy filesystem such
as ZFS or btrfs that supports compression.

My personal feeling is that the extra complexity of using filesystem
compression (risk of bugs in less widely-used code paths, greater
difficulty of disaster recovery, greater difficulty of predicting
effective available storage space) means that the cost savings aren't
justified for me versus just buying bigger backup disks instead.
