No, there is no way that Ubuntu will automatically upgrade the OS
version.  There are many out of support systems out there that have
not automatically upgraded.

There are a few apps (such as Firefox) that update themselves without
asking and it is possible to configure Ubuntu to install package
upgrades (within Ubuntu version) automatically, but not the OS version
itself.
