Agreed.
A little history...
The first distribution I ever used was Fedora. I was perfectly happy
with it until USB flash drives stopped working with the version I was
using, after the next version, whatever it was, was released. My son (8
or 9 at the time I think) was forcefully instructed to not update his
computer so that I could get a current backup of all my data on a flash
drive before swapping distributions.....
I chose to go to Kubuntu to get the KDE desktop. There were rumours
circulating about copyright/patent/somesuch issues with Gnome at the
time hence my choice. It was a while ago, memory has become hazy. All
was very well for a good while until it was, if memory serves me,
decided to rewrite KDE with, for me, dreadful results.
By that time, issues with gnome appeared to have gone away so I jumped
to Ubuntu. Again, all was well until gnome was rewritten. It was made
unusable on my desktop computer and simply wouldn't work at all on this
little Toshiba netbook that I mentioned earlier.
Mint/Mate worked beautifully for me on the same computers so that's
what I've been using ever since.
I always have and will continue to use Ubuntu Server on my home server
machine. Last time I did an upgrade, from 32 bit 14.04, it had been
running for something like 13 months since its last reboot which is
damn fine reliability.
I might try Ubuntu again as a VM, next time an LTS version is issued,
but until then I'm happy as I am.
