Hi,
you don't do it wrong.
It's not wrong to connect the headphone output of an el cheapo
electronic musical instrument or the headphone outputs of a computer to
the common Cinch AUX inputs of today's amplifiers. Nowadays it's
most of the times even possible to convert from balanced to unbalanced
without ever taking care of removing ground [1].
You are probably using el cheapo active computer speakers with an 3.5
mm (1⁄8 in) phone connector AUX inputs. That AUX inputs do use phone
connectors instead of Cinch speaks volumes ;).

The author died, the link is old, but while Firefox warns about a
potential security risk, it's worth to open his documents. However, in
